Special advisory committee on Iraq-related matters
Purpose
-
To provide advice to the chancellor
on a host of matters related to the possible war in Iraq
and its implications
for the campus:
- Educational programs
- Communication strategies.
- Management of campus events.
- Security
- Privacy
- Health and well being of our community.
- Protection of free speech and academic freedom.
- Other
- To function as a communications vehicle for the campus and the broader community on these matters.
Operating principles
- The committee believes in the importance of maintaining free and open discourse and debate and protecting the right of individuals to engage in political action in accordance with the University’s time, place and manner rules.
- The committee affirms the essential values of civility and tolerance in furthering the mission of the university.
- Freedom of speech is a bedrock value in a democracy. The committee affirms the right of individuals to free expression no matter how contentious their point of view may be, within the context of time, place and manner rules.
- The committee encourages demonstrated support for students, faculty and staff who are directly affected by the possible war (eg., those with family and friends living in that part of the world; reservists from this campus serving there, etc.)
- The campus must remain a place in which the University’s educational mandate and mission is allowed to continue unimpeded and unhindered.
