A message from the UC Education Abroad Program about student safety from program director John A. Marcum

In light of current events, I wish to reassure parents, students, and friends that the safety of EAP students is our highest priority. We are monitoring events closely and are in constant contact with our EAP staff abroad as well as the U.S. State Department, local U.S. embassies, our host institutions abroad, and our colleagues at other U.S. institutions who have students abroad.

EAP students abroad will be given regular updates and recommendations, as warranted by local conditions in each location. At the present time, all programs abroad in operation for 2002-2003 remain open. In the event of changes, updated information will be posted on this website.

A number of precautionary measures designed to maximize student safety are in place at all EAP centers abroad, including:

  • EAP staff and faculty abroad can contact the EAP Crisis Management Team and are accessible to EAP staff in the U.S. 24 hours a day.
  • Students have 24-hour emergency access to staff abroad, and are required to provide their contact information to staff in case of emergency.
  • Crisis and contingency plans at all EAP locations abroad have been updated in anticipation of the current situation. For security reasons, details of contingency plans are available to EAP staff only.

Again, please be assured that EAP staff around the world will continue to monitor events and respond appropriately. For additional information, or for specific assistance, please contact EAP.

UC is in constant contact with EAP staff abroad as well as with the U.S. State Department, local U.S. embassies, and host institutions. Study centers in EAP host countries are in touch with local US embassies and consulates about specific regional safety concerns. In addition, an EAP Crisis Management Team in the U.S. is available to staff and faculty abroad 24 hours a day. Emergency contact information is online.

Sincerely,
John A. Marcum
Universitywide Director of the Education Abroad Program
