Deborah Berke, a New York City-based architect known for her design excellence and commitment to architectural innovation, is the first recipient of the College of Environmental Design’s inaugural Berkeley-Rupp Architecture Professorship and Prize.

Architecture student wins prestigious new sustainability fellowship

May 21, 2013:

By updating and expanding California’s utility-allowance calculator, Berkeley grad student Antony Kim hopes to make sustainable architecture more available to low-cost housing developers. He and his faculty mentor, Galen Cranz, are winners of the first-ever Schmidt-MacArthur Fellowship, which encourages the design of sustainable products and processes.

David Woo, who began his career in 1967 as an architect working on the University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, has chosen to honor his late father, Woo Hon Fai — and to celebrate the now-historic structure — with a major gift to the campus.

Grad student honored for joining architecture, information management

I School grad student Leslie Tom was recently named one of the American Institute of Architects’ inaugural knowledge scholars. Under that mantle, Tom will use her IT skills to gather, organize and communicate architectural knowledge and best practices from November’s AIA “Crafting the Future” conference in Japan.

Architect named Fulbright NEXUS scholar for Western Hemisphere research on sustainable, affordable housing

April 25, 2011:

María-Paz Gutierrez, a University of California, Berkeley, assistant professor of architecture, has been named to the 2011-2012 Fulbright Regional Network for Applied Research (NEXUS) Scholar Program as part of a 20-member team working to promote best practices in fighting poverty and inequality in the Western Hemisphere. She will be focusing on building a sustainable, affordable housing prototype for deployment in an emergency, especially flooding.

Architect envisions border wall as good neighbor

Ronald Rael envisions a wall dotted with multi-purpose installations that include a life-saving water collection site, a treatment plant for toxic wastewater from the New River, a swing, a volleyball court, a solar farm and even a confessional.

Architecture professor and activist Kenneth Simmons dies at 77

August 2, 2010:

Kenneth Harlan Simmons, a professor emeritus of architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, died of cancer in Johannesburg, South Africa, on July 6 at the age of 77. He was known for his work in equal rights, urban planning and community development from San Francisco to Detroit, Harlem and South Africa.

BAM/PFA selects Diller Scofidio + Renfro to design new building

June 23, 2010:

Following a national search, the world renowned New York City-based design firm of Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) has been chosen to design the new Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAM/PFA) at the University of California, Berkeley. The new museum complex is targeted for completion by late 2014.
