Students check out incoming chancellor

May 3, 2013:

Nicholas Dirks introduced himself and fielded questions at a conversational meet-up Thursday afternoon between UC Berkeley students and the campus’s next chancellor. About 100 people turned out for what Dirks called one of the “first of a long series of conversations with you.” Earlier in the day, Chancellor Birgeneau and Dirks met with student winners of the “Fiat Lux Remix” contest.

Chancellor responds to ASUC divestment vote

April 18, 2013:

“I sincerely hope that we can avoid the rancor and divisiveness that arose in the wake of a previous ASUC vote in 2010,” Chancellor Birgeneau writes, “even as we support every student’s right to freedom of expression and acknowledge the diversity of views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”

LEAD Center brings student-leadership training under one roof

August 17, 2012:

The ASUC Auxiliary’s new LEAD Center, a one-stop shop for Berkeley students looking to find leadership training, get involved with organizations or receive advising for student groups, opens its doors on Monday, Aug. 20. The new center is located in 102 Hearst Gym.

Dance Marathon to raise money for pediatric AIDS

March 20, 2012:

Berkeley students are throwing themselves an all-night dance party for a good cause: to raise thousands of dollars to help fight AIDS in children worldwide. The seventh annual Dance Marathon starts at 8 p.m. April 13 and feet will keep moving until 8 a.m. the next day. Registration ($19) closes Friday.

Berkeley students say they want better shops on Telegraph Avenue and in downtown Berkeley, and a cleaner, safer-feeling environment, according to the results of a survey conducted by the Graduate Assembly and the ASUC to help inform city planners, politicos and business groups.

On April 28, the ASUC Senate upheld a veto of a bill that called for the UC Berkeley administration and the UC Regents to divest from any investment in companies with business interests which support “the occupation of the Palestinian territories” by Israel. UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert J. Birgeneau reacts to the debate.
