Campus unveils revised stadium financing plan

February 19, 2013:

Working to keep a promise to pay for the Simpson Center for Student-Athlete High Performance and the renovation of California Memorial Stadium without using campus funds, UC Berkeley officials have refined the original financial model to incorporate new sources of revenue.

‘Great Lung Run’ honors Berkeley rower

When their teammate Jill Costello was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2009, the UC Berkeley Women’s crew committed themselves to the fight against the disease. On Dec. 1, “Team Jill” joined Kelcey Harrison in the last few miles of her four-month cross-country run, which raised money and awareness in Costello’s memory.

Three more Golden Bears took home Olympic gold medals Thursday, as former Cal All-American forward Alex Morgan led the U.S. women’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Japan and former Cal women’s water polo standouts Heather Petri and Elsie Windes guided the U.S. to gold with an 8-5 victory over Spain.

August 9, 2012:

In men’s water polo, Aleksa Saponjic and his Serbia team advanced to the semifinals, while John Mann and the USA lost in the quarterfinal round. Former Bear Alysia Montano, winner of the 800 meters in the U.S. Track and Field Olympic trials, posted the top time in the 800 heats.

Day 10: Morgan heads Team USA into soccer final

August 7, 2012:

With the eyes of the world upon her and a trip to the Olympic final on the line, former Bear forward Alex Morgan headed in the game-winning goal to book the U.S. women’s soccer team’s ticket to the gold-medal match.

Women’s soccer star to shine on New Zealand Olympic team

July 25, 2012:

UC Berkeley student Betsy Hassett, a resident of New Zealand, will be on her homeland’s soccer team, the Football Ferns, at the Olympics and celebrate a birthday while there on Aug. 4. “This has been my dream and my goal since I was so young,” Hassett says of being at the London Games in a Cal Athletics profile of the midfielder, one of the top players in the Pac-12 conference.

As reopening nears, Memorial Stadium rolls out the green carpet

July 25, 2012:

Work crews readying Memorial Stadium for the first home game, Sept. 1, are on a 10-day mission to lay state-of-the-art synthetic turf on the football field. The project began months ago, when the field was dug up and lowered and an extensive infrastructure for game operations was installed.

Cal senior set to swim in two Olympic events

July 19, 2012:

Caitlin Leverenz, 21, who will swim the 200 and 400 IM at the Summer Olympics, has relied on her faith to keep her afloat through her illustrious career. Today, Cal Athletics profiles the UC Berkeley senior, considered the nation’s top female college swimmer after winning this year’s NCAA Pac-12 Swimmer of the Meet award and the 2012 Honda Sports Award for swimming.

‘Octolympian’ Mike Teti, Cal men’s crew coach, heads to 8th Olympic Games

July 12, 2012:

In the first in a series of Cal Athletics’ stories on UC Berkeley athletes and coaches at the Summer Olympics, “Octolympian” Mike Teti is profiled. Teti, head men’s crew coach at Cal, has participated in seven previous Olympic Games. In London, the 1992 Olympic bronze medalist will coach the men’s eight rowing team.

When a seismically improved Memorial Stadium reopens in September 2012, one of the goals will be to aim for zero waste. Former Cal rower Jill Costello receives NCAA’s Inspiration Award

The NCAA has given Jill Costello, a beloved member of the Cal women’s rowing team who died of lung cancer in 2010, its first posthumous Inspiration Award. Costello was the coxswain for the varsity eight and graduated from UC Berkeley about a month before her death.

Swimathon to raise scholarship money for disabled athletes

Cal Athletics will host a swimathon this Saturday, April 23, to raise money for scholarships for disabled athletes. The event will run from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The “Swim with Mike” fundraiser has raised nearly $11 million in the last three decades.

Three UC Berkeley athletic teams to be preserved

February 11, 2011:

Three athletic teams at UC Berkeley, slated to cease intercollegiate competition at the end of this academic year – women’s lacrosse, women’s gymnastics and rugby – will be preserved, campus officials announced Friday.
