A new slide show from the UC Botanical garden highlights the garden’s Eastern North American collection, which offers nostalgic encounters with plants from the past for those who grew up on the East Coast.

Sick plants? Botanical Garden clinic is Saturday

May 31, 2012:

Anyone with a plant that’s wilting or otherwise sick can take advantage of free help this Saturday, June 2, at the UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley. Volunteer plant pathologists and other plant experts will be on hand to make a diagnosis and recommend care.

BERKELEY — These are hardy ground bromeliads from the montane areas of Chile. They produce bloom stalks in spring up to 15 feet with these incredible flower colors. The lime green one is Puya chilensis and the more fascinating teal one is Puya berteroana. What looks like spikes sticking out are actually sterile flower spikes which serve as bird perches.  [...]

Botanical Garden’s Holly Forbes honored for plant conservation work

April 12, 2011:

Holly Forbes, curator at the UC Botanical Garden, has won the 2011 Star Award from the Center for Plant Conservation for her work with rare and imperiled plant species. The award recognizes individuals who demonstrate the concern, cooperation and personal investment needed to conserve imperiled native plants.

Botanical Garden braces for blooming corpse plant

June 18, 2010:

The UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley, nestled in Strawberry Canyon just above the central campus, features a mind-boggling 12,000 kinds of plants and breathtaking views of the Bay Area. The term breathtaking soon will describe the rotten flesh-like stench of the garden’s about-to-blossom Titan Arum, aka the corpse plant.

New orchid species is discovered in the UC Botanical Garden collection

April 27, 2010:

A Haitian orchid is enjoying celebrity status at the UC Botanical Garden, after scientists discovered that the long-time Garden resident is a distinct new species. The orchid has been named for the UC Berkeley research associate who found it in the wild.
