Students take spring break for public service

While many students kicked back or headed to the beach for spring break, more than 130 from UC Berkeley fanned out into communities near and far. These civic-minded students, working through the Alternative Breaks program, lent their skills to post-Katrina renewal in New Orleans and environmental justice in Oakland, among other projects.

Nearly 100 UC Berkeley students are participating in service-learning trips this week through the Cal Corps Public Service Center’s Alternative Breaks program. Seven trips spread throughout California and in New Orleans, each consisting of 12-14 student volunteers, are taking place March 20-26.
