From visits by prominent Chinese and Taiwanese artists to a new opera based on the children’s novel The Secret Garden to talks on understanding the family dog and feeding the world’s soon-to-be 9 billion mouths, UC Berkeley’s spring calendar boasts events to engage, entertain and explain.

As part of his Cal Performances-arranged visit to the Berkeley campus with the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra, Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel coached the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra in an open rehearsal on Tuesday, Nov. 27.

Esa-Pekka Salonen, conductor and composer, moves in for the weekend

November 14, 2012:

Conductor and composer Esa-Pekka Salonen, considered one of the world’s most brilliant musicians, spent four days at UC Berkeley in a Cal Performances Orchestral Residency that became a whirlwind of concerts and appearances featuring some of his own compositions, with performances by the Philharmonia Orchestra and student musicians.

Hot topics and cultural lightning rods, Glass and Guthrie, sublimity and absurdity. It’s — what else? — the fall events season at UC Berkeley. Experts share their perspectives on topics ranging from health care to to the presidential election. A staging of the Philip Glass opera “Einstein on the Beach” and music from the Simon Bolivar youth ensemble are among the performing-arts treats.

Kids + Ailey + Cal Performances = magic

August 7, 2012:

Cal Performances’ AileyCamp at UC Berkeley brought 51 local youngsters to campus this summer for six weeks of intensive lessons in dance and life, culminating in a grand performance at Zellerbach Hall. Staffer Amy Cranch, a camp volunteer, narrates a first-person account of the campers’ grit, passion and skill, complete with slideshow.

Cal Performances’ Ojai North! series begins November 11 with a special event — Steven Schick conducting John Luther Adams’s expansive spatial work for 9 to 99 percussion and piccolo players — outside Hertz Hall.

Historic Greek Theatre safe, sound and superb after upgrades

The 108-year-old Greek Theatre’s seismic rating has gone from “very poor” to “good” following six months of retrofit work and other upgrades.

Cal Performances announces 2012-13 season

April 24, 2012:

Matías Tarnopolsky’s third season as director of Cal Performances, announced Tuesday, will feature 113 artists and ensembles in music, dance and theater performances ranging from Bach to Ionesco, Swan Lake to Einstein on the Beach.

Desdemona takes the microphone: A conversation with Toni Morrison

November 17, 2011:

In conjunction with Cal Performances’ recent U.S. premiere of “Desdemona,” the Townsend Center for the Humanities brought together the project’s collaborators — director Peter Sellars, Nobel Prize-winning novelist Toni Morrison and singer/songwriter Rokia Traoré — in conversation with faculty members Abdul JanMohamed (English), Tamara Roberts (music); Darieck Scott (African American Studies). Cal Performances honors Earl Cheit, longtime trustee and friend of the arts

December 6, 2010:

For decades of service to Cal Performances and the arts, Professor Emeritus Earl Cheit took center stage at the end of Sunday’s Takacs Quartet concert in Hertz Hall. The arts organization honored Cheit, the founding chair of its Board of Trustees, with an award of distinction — and a performance of a Mozart quartet.
