“We have just arrived at a proud and great moment in the history of Cal,” said Chancellor Robert Birgeneau Friday at a news conference staged on the new, 1.5-acre Lisa and Douglas Goldman Plaza.

At Saturday’s Homecoming game, the World War I-era California Memorial Stadium was rededicated to “all Californians who have sacrificed their lives in service to our nation.”

UC Berkeley’s new, improved Memorial Stadium will have a new, improved menu when it reopens Sept. 1. Diverse concessions provided by Cal Dining will include dim sum, sushi, hummus and veggie burgers alongside traditional fare.

In response to a Wall Street Journal article earlier this week on the financing plan for California Memorial Stadium, UC Berkeley Vice Chancellor John Wilton has submitted a letter to the editor expressing his displeasure with the misrepresentation of the project, and the Athletic Department has prepared an FAQ on the project’s financial model.

Memorial Stadium suits up for Golden Bears’ kickoff

The seismic strengthening and renovation of UC Berkeley’s 90-year-old football stadium is entering its final phase and on schedule to be game-ready for the Golden Bears’ season opener against Nevada Sept. 1.

The manager of Campus Recycling and Refuse Services, Lin King, is working with campus groups, including Cal Athletics, to meet aggressive UC waste-diversion goals. To reduce, reuse, recycle and compost, he says, is not only the best thing for planet Earth, but good for the bottom line as well.

City of Berkeley lauds zero-waste stadium initiative

February 6, 2012:

At a Feb. 4 basketball game, Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates presented a city proclamation lauding Cal Athletics for its trial-run recycling efforts at Haas Pavilion this season, and “its commitment to the goal of achieving zero waste at California Memorial Stadium” when that facility reopens this fall.
