At Convocation 2013, Apple co-founder hails Berkeley's 'human values' with photoswith video

May 20, 2013:

A crowd of some 3,900 in black caps and gowns, and 21,000 fanatically proud fans in the stands above, turned out at California Memorial Stadium for Saturday’s Commencement Convocation 2013. Apple co-founder and Berkeley alum Steve Wozniak keynoted the event, which was held in the sports venue for the first time in more than 40 years.

Apple co-founder, Silicon Valley icon, and philanthropist Steve Wozniak, a UC Berkeley alumnus, will deliver the commencement address. The event will also include remarks by outgoing Chancellor Robert Birgeneau and this year’s top graduating senior Ritankar Das, a double major in bioengineering and chemical biology from Fremont, Calif. During the ceremony, Das will receive the University Medal for his scholarship, public service and humanity.

Berkeley’s Class of 2013 has chosen Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak to be keynote speaker at its May 18 Commencement Convocation at Memorial Stadium. Gladys Hernandez, senior class council president, said the council put the ’86 alum “at the top of the list” of possible convocation speakers. Wozniak is currently chief scientist for the data-storage company Fusion-io.

It’s fitting that the life of Josh Biddle, UC Berkeley’s top graduating senior, would read like the lyrics of “Amazing Grace.” During high school in Marin County, Calif., and at a subsequent boarding program for troubled teens in Colorado, he was lost. But while driving a tractor in his Great-aunt Velma’s farm, finding his niche in science at City College of San Francisco and transferring to UC Berkeley, he was found. This Sunday, he will share his story at Commencement Convocation.
