Local high school students with disabilities were urged to consider higher education, even UC Berkeley, as within their reach, at a campus event celebrating California’s annual Ed Roberts Day, Jan. 23. A take-home message: “your presence is going to matter to the University and the world.”

ASL language courses a sign of the times at Berkeley

Renowned for the range of languages it offers — everything from Aramaic and Breton to Urdu and Yiddish — UC Berkeley has just added introductory courses in American Sign Language. Students are enthusiastic about the ASL offerings, taught by an accomplished scholar and linguist, as are disability-studies advocates and members of the deaf community.

Among college graduates (including Ph.D holders) with disabilities, only one in five is employed. WorkAbility, a program offered by Berkeley’s Disabled Students Program, helps students with disabilities make inroads into the world of work, through internships related to their career interests.
UC Berkeley launches groundbreaking disability research initiative
May 11, 2011:
UC Berkeley on May 11 announced a new research initiative that will make it a worldwide leader in disability studies. It includes two new faculty positions and multidiscipinary research projects related to disability that involve 10 faculty members from eight campus units. The effort will be housed in the Haas Diversity Research Center.
