The least expensive way for the Western U.S. to reduce greenhouse gas emissions enough to help prevent the worst consequences of global warming is to replace coal with renewable and other sources of energy that may include nuclear power, according to a new study by UC Berkeley researchers.

Midday power failure darkens areas of Berkeley near campus
March 22, 2011:
An extensive PG&E power failure late Tuesday morning knocked out electrical power to parts of the city of Berkeley surrounding UC Berkeley, though not to locations fed by power from the campus. Most electrical service had been restored by 2 p.m.
