Physicist Art Rosenfeld to receive National Medal of Technology & Innovation

On Dec. 21, President Barack Obama named UC Berkeley and LBNL physicist Arthur Rosenfeld one of this year’s 11 recipients of the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. The annual award honors the nation’s top inventors. Rosenfeld is often called the “godfather of energy efficiency” because of his pioneering work on reducing the nation’s energy usage.

Daniel Price, a UC Berkeley senior majoring in engineering and physics, has been named a 2013 Rhodes Scholar. The Rhodes Scholarships, which are the oldest and most celebrated international fellowship awards in the world, provide full financial support for students to pursue a degree at the University of Oxford in England.

The award recognizes Gadgil, who is known for his work on affordable water disinfection systems and fuel-efficient cookstoves for developing nations, for “his steady pursuit to blend research, invention and humanitarianism for broad social impact.”

Professor Ananya Roy has been named the inaugural Blum Center Distinguished Chair in Global Poverty and Practice. Roy, education director at the Blum Center for Developing Economies, led the creation of the center’s popular Global Poverty and Practice minor, the largest minor on campus. The chair is endowed by a $1.5 million anonymous gift that is being matched by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

United Nations recognizes architecture professor Mary Comerio’s work on environmental emergencies

UC Berkeley architecture professor Mary Comerio has received the Green Star Award from the United Nation’s Environment Programme, the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and Green Cross International in recognition of her 25 years of work in seismic safety for housing and post-disaster recovery. Most recently, Comerio has been involved in reconstruction efforts following the devastating 2008 earthquake in China and the 2010 quake in Haiti.
