Japanese quake survivors at UC Berkeley give as good as they get

August 7, 2012:

Three hundred Japanese teens touched by last year’s temblor, tsunami and nuclear emergency have spent three weeks at Berkeley through the Tomodachi SoftBank Leadership Program. They’ll be sharing their ideas on civic revitalization, and meeting the public, before returning home.

Physicist Hitoshi Murayama to direct new Kavli institute at Univ. of Tokyo

February 8, 2012:

The Kavli Foundation endowed a new Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe at the University of Tokyo to be directed by theoretical physicist Hitoshi Murayama. While maintaining his position as UC Berkeley professor of physics, Murayama will guide institute research into cosmological questions such as how the universe began, how it will end and what laws govern it.

East Asia scholar Robert A. Scalapino dies at 92

November 4, 2011:

Robert A. Scalapino, the Robson Research Professor of Government emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, and a renowned expert in the field of East Asian studies, died Monday, Nov. 1, in Oakland, of complications from a respiratory infection. He was 92.

Bancroft Library to expand documentation of Japanese Americans’ World War II experiences

June 29, 2011:

The Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley, has received two grants from the U.S. National Park Service to expand its efforts documenting the World War II era experiences of Japanese Americans.

Japanese singer Jero to receive Berkeley Japan New Vision Award

April 4, 2011:

Jero, a Japanese-African-American singer credited with reviving popular interest in Japan’s postwar sentimental ballads known as enka, will receive the 2011 Berkeley Japan New Vision Award from UC Berkeley’s Center for Japanese Studies in a private ceremony on campus Friday, April 8, and will perform a short, free concert at Wheeler Hall after receiving the award.

Haas students cancel Japan trip, start fundraising

Berkeley MBA students — including eight from Japan — who organized a spring-break trek to Japan for classmates have canceled the trip and are now turning to fundraising for the earthquake-ravaged nation.

News reports and vivid images of the death and destruction wrought by Friday’s 8.9-magnitude earthquake-driven tsunami in eastern Japan have triggered stress and anxiety worldwide. To help UC Berkeley’s campus community cope with post-quake shock and excessive worry, among other things, University Health Services has compiled a resource list that includes tips and services available to the campus community, including contact information for making donations to the American Red Cross.

The worst damage in Friday’s disaster in Japan was not caused by the shaking of the seismic waves themselves, but by the tsunami. The Berkeley Seismological Laboratory’s Seismo Blog shows how, and explains other scientific aspects of the still-unfolding tragedy.
