Building an LGBT community for STEM majors

April 30, 2013:

An appreciation for diversity and a passion for energizing student life led Paul Zarate,a senior majoring in mechanical engineering, to found the Berkeley chapter of Out in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (oSTEM), a national organization dedicated to the professional development of LGBT students.

First Brett LGBT fellowship goes to Italian Studies student

The first Philip Brett LGBT Fund award has been bestowed on Chris Atwood, a graduate student in Italian Studies. The fund was set up in 2009 in honor of the late professor Philip Brett, an eminent music scholar whose research kick-started the field of musical scholarship about, and by, people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender.

University of California President Mark G. Yudof and Board of Regents Chair Sherry Lansing have joined the It Gets Better campaign, posting a YouTube video that reaches out to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth with a message of hope and inclusion.

Rafael Colonna, a Ph.D. student in sociology, has been interviewing same-sex parents across California to find out. In the process, he’s discovered that in family life, “small practices” such as assigning family names and titles, “have a lot of meaning behind them.”

Law students look at climate for LGBT and HIV+ in El Salvador

Students with Berkeley Law’s International Human Rights Law Clinic have returned from a fact-finding mission to El Salvador, where they examined the difficult climate for the country’s LGBT and HIV-positive population.
