The Campaign for Berkeley, the campus’s $3 billion fundraising effort, has hit the $2 billion milestone. Philanthropy will play a central role in guaranteeing UC Berkeley’s future, says Chancellor Robert Birgeneau, who acknowledged the new financial reality in which the state now provides just 16 percent of the campus budget, and even less with state cuts looming. “We must thank our extraordinary donors, who deeply believe in UC Berkeley’s public mission, for we are counting on them as never before,” Birgeneau says in the latest issue of The Promise of Berkeley.

Swimathon to raise scholarship money for disabled athletes

Cal Athletics will host a swimathon this Saturday, April 23, to raise money for scholarships for disabled athletes. The event will run from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The “Swim with Mike” fundraiser has raised nearly $11 million in the last three decades.
Richard N. Goldman, philanthropist, adviser and friend of the university, passes away

UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau issued a statement today on the passing of Richard N. Goldman, who died Sunday, Nov. 28, at the age of 90. Birgeneau called Goldman “a visionary philanthropist, remarkable business leader and public citizen, and devoted friend and alumnus.”
