At a special meeting on Monday, the Berkeley Academic Senate voted 336 to 34 in favor of four resolutions ranging from a call for special training for campus police to a condemnation of “the UC Berkeley administration’s authorization of violent responses to nonviolent protests over the past two years.”

Update on Tuesday’s shooting at UC Berkeley

November 16, 2011:

UC Berkeley police released more details about the student who was shot Tuesday at the Haas School of Business and later died at Oakland’s Highland Hospital. The student, 32-year-old Christopher Nathen Elliot Travis, was an undergraduate at UC Berkeley majoring in business. UC Berkeley Police Capt. Margo Bennett said Travis was carrying a loaded, semiautomatic handgun – a 9 mm Ruger – when he was shot multiple times by a UC Berkeley police officer in a Haas computer lab.

UC Berkeley officials on Wednesday identified the man who wielded a gun at the Haas School of Business and was shot by university police on Tuesday as an undergraduate transfer student. Christopher Nathen Elliot Travis, 32, died Tuesday night after being transported to Highland Hospital.

Joint campus-city police safety patrol resumes

August 18, 2011:

The successful Joint Southside Safety Patrol will operate again on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights this school year. Beginning tonight, teams of campus and city officers in two squad cars will keep neighborhoods near campus free of unruly parties in off-campus student rental housing and fraternities.

New report finds dramatic crime reduction in East Palo Alto

December 15, 2010:

The Peninsula city of East Palo Alto shows a dramatic drop in crime over the past two decades, according to an independent analysis by researchers at Berkeley Law’s Center for Criminal Justice. Once known as the U.S. per capita “murder capital,” the city’s crime rate dropped 62 percent, across all major crime types, between 1986 and 2008.

New Southside joint safety patrol already a success

After only a few months of operation, a pilot program on the city’s south side that set up a joint safety patrol by the UC Berkeley Police Department and the Berkeley Police Department is showing successful results

UC Berkeley and Berkeley city police have formed a new joint patrol to target improving public safety in Southside neighborhoods and after home games.

Campus acts to remove hunger striker’s encampment

May 10, 2010:

This morning, the campus removed an encampment of hunger strikers outside California Hall. No arrests were made and police provided vans to assist in transporting the group’s personal belongings.

Chancellor Birgeneau denounces Arizona immigration bill

UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau has denounced Arizona Bill SB 1070, saying the immigration measure cannot be implemented without engaging in racial profiling.
