Researchers focus on the waste disposal units of living cells

Eva Nogales and her colleagues in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology and at Berkeley Lab have taken the most detailed look ever at the “regulatory particle” used by the protein machines known as proteasomes to identify and degrade proteins marked for destruction. This particle is critical to a broad range of vital biochemical processes, including the immune defense system.
