As he prepared to hand over the reins to his successor as chancellor, Robert Birgeneau reflected on his nearly nine years in California Hall, and on his future as a member of the UC Berkeley faculty. And he explained why he’s “deeply worried about public higher education.”

September 22, 2011:

About 75 protesters gathered inside Tolman Hall today, taking over empty classrooms following a noontime rally on Sproul Plaza and a march across campus.

Reforms in store for student-conduct code

To address concerns raised in the wake of 2009-10 protests, the campus established a task force of 19 faculty, staff and students to review the student-conduct process. All of the panel’s recommendations have been accepted, and most are already being implemented.

Wednesday’s national Day of Action for Public Education brought small crowds of student and union protesters to the UC Berkeley campus. Police arrested 17 protesters late in the day after they refused to leave Wheeler Hall at closing time.

Hunger strike continues despite chancellor’s offer to meet

May 12, 2010:

A hunger strike by a small group of UC Berkeley Chicano/Latino students and their supporters went into its ninth day today (Tuesday, May 11), despite a plea yesterday by campus administrators that the protesters end it that evening in exchange for a meeting today with Chancellor Robert Birgeneau. This afternoon, about 60 people held a rally in front of California Hall in support of the strikers and their demands.

A statewide “day of action” for public education kicked off quietly Thursday morning at Berkeley, with small groups of protesters greeting students, staff and faculty at major campus entrances with chants and signs. Many Berkeley faculty canceled classes to participate in events in Sacramento, where the focus was on the state Legislature’s long-term disinvestment in public higher education in California.
