It's gold times three for UC Berkeley communicators

Three gold awards from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) recently went to UC Berkeley communicators.

Ten Berkeley faculty named to American Academy of Arts and Sciences

April 24, 2013:

Ten Berkeley professors have been named members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a prestigious 233-year-old honorary society of national leaders from academia, business, public affairs and the humanities.

Four faculty members named fellows of AAAS

November 29, 2012:

Four UC Berkeley faculty members – plant biologist Sheng Luan, cell biologist Kunxin Luo, nuclear engineer Eric Norman and chemist Evan Williams – are among 702 new fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, bringing the campus total to 227.

David Wake and two other Berkeley faculty honored by California Academy

September 28, 2012:

David Wake, amphibian expert and professor emeritus of integrative biology, will receive this year’s Fellows’ Medal, the highest honor of the California Academy of Sciences. Wildlife ecologist Justin Brashares, associate professor of ESPM, and astronomer Steven Beckwith are among 10 newly elected fellows of the academy.

Teachers have little time to teach science, study shows

October 25, 2011:

A statewide survey by researchers at UC Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science indicates that elementary school teachers don’t have the time or training to adequately teach science. “High quality science learning opportunities are only available in about 10 percent of California elementary school classrooms on a regular basis,” says lead researcher Rena Dorph.

Cal Alumni, Chevron partner on new STEM scholarships

April 12, 2011:

At the April 9 Charter Gala honoring U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, Chevron Corp. announced a $100,000 contribution to the Cal Alumni Association’s Achievement Award Program to promote science, engineering, technology and math education.

Jillian Banfield profiled in L’Oréal-UNESCO video

March 15, 2011:

UC Berkeley’s Jillian Banfield was named the 2011 North American Laureate at the 13th Annual L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Awards ceremony in Paris on March 3, which included the screening of a video interview with Banfield discussing her research and philosophy of science.

Tick population plummets in absence of lizard hosts

February 15, 2011:

The Western fence lizard’s reputation for helping to reduce the threat of Lyme disease is in jeopardy. A new study led by UC Berkeley researchers found that areas where the lizard had been removed saw a subsequent drop in the population of the ticks that transmit Lyme disease. The decline in tick numbers seems to suggest a decreased risk of human exposure to Lyme disease when the lizard is gone.

Indoors or out, summer means camp at Berkeley

February 15, 2011:

Summer fun can mean skateboarding and swimming, or science experiments, writing workshops and business school — and Berkeley’s summer camp programs have it all. The season for registration and applications is officially open.
