Derek Van Rheenen, the director of Berkeley’s Athletic Study Center, is living proof that “you can have a very rich athletic, physical life and a very rich academic and intellectual life.” He’s determined to teach today’s crop of Cal athletes they can “have it all.”

‘Great Lung Run’ honors Berkeley rower

When their teammate Jill Costello was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2009, the UC Berkeley Women’s crew committed themselves to the fight against the disease. On Dec. 1, “Team Jill” joined Kelcey Harrison in the last few miles of her four-month cross-country run, which raised money and awareness in Costello’s memory.

Pac-12 Networks to showcase conference schools

The Pac-12 Conference announced July 27 the creation of Pac-12 Networks, which will provide unprecedented exposure for each of the league’s institutions in both the athletic and academic arenas. The Golden Bears won the 2011 national collegiate championship May 21, by defeating Brigham Young, 21-14, in Utah. Flyhalf James Bailes was named MVP, as California earned the 26th title in program history.
Pac-12 signs new media rights deal; how it impacts Cal

The landmark media rights package announced May 4 by Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott will benefit all members of the conference by generating new revenues, expanding the reach of the conference and providing more national exposure, Cal’s Intercollegiate Athletics office reports.
Men’s gymnastics program to continue at UC Berkeley

As a result of fundraising efforts that have raised in excess of $2.5 million, the men’s gymnastics program at UC Berkeley will be preserved as an Intercollegiate Athletics sport, campus officials announced Monday.

In the wake of a full-tilt fundraising campaign, spearheaded by former Bear pitcher Stu Gordon, Chancellor Robert Birgeneau declared Friday that Cal baseball is here to stay, after all. Donors pledged some $9 million in six weeks; a formal announcement of the chancellor’s decision will come once another $1 million is raised.
