Cellphone, GPS data suggest new strategy for alleviating traffic tie-ups
December 20, 2012:
Tired of sitting in rush hour traffic? A new study demonstrates that asking everyone to cut their driving is only moderately effective in reducing congestion, but asking those in specific communities – those that contribute most to bottlenecks – may work better.
$2.5 million grant to improve traffic safety
August 17, 2012:
California’s Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) has awarded nearly $2.5 million in grants to two research and education centers affiliated with the Institute of Transportation Studies to improve safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists, and drivers. The Safe Transportation Research & Education Center (SafeTREC) and the Technology Transfer Program (Tech Transfer) will use the funds to study better ways to prevent crashes and to help local agencies identify potentially hazardous surface roadway conditions.
UCTC receives funding for new transportation research
January 19, 2012:
The University of California Transportation Center (UCTC) on the UC Berkeley campus is overseeing a new research consortium of five other UC and four Cal State University campuses that just received a $3.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation and a matching amount from California’s Department of Transportation.
Kicking hybrids out of carpool lanes backfires, slowing traffic for all
October 10, 2011:
The end of a California program granting free access to carpool lanes by solo drivers of hybrid cars has unintentionally slowed traffic in all lanes, according to a new report by researchers at UC Berkeley’s Institute of Transportation Studies. It turns out that when regular-use lanes became more congested with the addition of more hybrids, the carpool lanes slowed down as well. The transportation engineers explain this counterintuitive result.
Smarter Traveler research initiative seeks to predict traffic jams
April 13, 2011:
UC Berkeley transportation researchers are partnering with IBM and Caltrans to develop technology that can forecast traffic jams. The collaboration is part of UC Berkeley’s Mobile Millennium project at the California Center for Innovative Transportation.
New site maps state’s severe traffic collisions
April 6, 2011:
UC Berkeley researchers have launched a powerful new tool, the Transportation Injury Mapping System, that allows online searches of serious and fatal crashes in California. Users can view the history of crashes by county, city, neighborhood or along specific routes.
