Campus launches mobile pay-for-parking service October 1, 2014:

People using hourly parking on campus can now use a mobile parking-payment option, PayByPhone. It parkers to pay using a credit or debit card via PayByPhone’s mobile app, by going online or by dialing a toll-free phone number.

Suburban sprawl cancels carbon-footprint savings of dense urban cores

A CoolClimate Map of New York City's carbon footprint by zipcode tabulation area shows a pattern typical of large metropolitan areas: a small footprint in the urban core but a large footprint in surrounding suburbs. January 6, 2014:

Interactive carbon-footprint maps developed by UC Berkeley researchers show that while population-dense U.S. cities contribute lower greenhouse-gas emissions per person than other areas of the country, these cities’ extensive suburbs essentially wipe out the climate benefits.

Free urban cycling workshop on campus Monday, Nov. 4

The East Bay Bicycle Coalition, in coordination with the UC Berkeley Police Department, is a offering a free, two-hour bicycle-safety workshop on Monday, Nov. 4. The interactive class serves as a pre-requisite for a free half-day road-skills workshop.

September 10, 2013:

A new report released by the International Council on Clean Transportation ranks the fuel-efficiency of U.S. domestic airlines. UC Berkeley’s Mark Hansen helped develop the methodology used in the study, which uses publicly available data and accounts for differences in business operations across airlines.

Davis-Berkeley shuttle adds weekend service

April 8, 2013:

In response to rider interest, the shuttle between UC Berkeley and UC Davis has added Saturday and Sunday service. On weekends the shuttle, operated by UC Davis Fleet Services, offers two runs a day. The service is offered to students, faculty and staff from both campuses.

Connected Corridors aims to up efficiency of existing roadways

March 18, 2013:

Connected Corridors, a project led by engineering profs Alex Bayen and Roberto Horowitz, is developing technologies to help Caltrans gather and analyze traffic data. A goal of the research: to make existing roadways more efficient, rather than launching new highway-construction projects.

Dan Krummes, longtime director of UC Berkeley’s Institute of Transportation Studies library and a Distinguished University Librarian, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 18, at the age of 62.

For a quick bike fix, DIY 24/7 at new repair station

October 10, 2012:

A bicycle fix-it station is now available outside the Energy Biosciences Building, near the corner of Oxford and Hearst. The station, installed last week, allows cyclists to perform quick repairs and adjustments, 24/7. Two more are slated for installation on the central campus.

BART teams with UC Berkeley to adopt earthquake early warning system

September 27, 2012:

The Berkeley Seismological Laboratory has hooked BART into the Northern California seismic network, in an earthquake early-warning system that automatically slows trains in the event of a quake. For quakes beyond the Bay Area, BART gets advance warning, so that its trains can slow to a crawl before the ground begins to shake.

$2.5 million grant to improve traffic safety

August 17, 2012:

California’s Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) has awarded nearly $2.5 million in grants to two research and education centers affiliated with the Institute of Transportation Studies to improve safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists, and drivers. The Safe Transportation Research & Education Center (SafeTREC) and the Technology Transfer Program (Tech Transfer) will use the funds to study better ways to prevent crashes and to help local agencies identify potentially hazardous surface roadway conditions.

Future of California high-speed rail looks green

July 26, 2012:

A comprehensive life-cycle assessment by transportation researchers gives the green seal of approval for California’s high-speed rail project. The analysis comes on the heels of a state Legislature vote authorizing $8 billion for initial construction, set to begin in 2013, of the high-speed system.
