State budget shortfall forces second fee increase for fall 2011

July 14, 2011:

The UC Board of Regents Thursday approved a plan to close a $1 billion budget shortfall through a combination of higher student tuition, cost-cutting measures and operational efficiencies. Regents, on a 14-4 vote, reluctantly approved a 9.6 percent tuition increase, effective this fall for all UC students. Also: Retirement plan updates from regents, UCOP

Clark Kerr served as UC Berkeley chancellor, UC president and higher-education leader during times of immense change and upheaval in the 1950s and ’60s. His long-time friend David Gardner, UC president emeritus, examines Kerr’s private life and public leadership in a new paper from the Center for Studies in Higher Education.

Regents endorse state budget, Prop. 30

July 19, 2012:

In a single vote, the board endorsed the state’s 2012-12 UC appropriation, supported Gov. Brown’s revenue measure and agreed to freeze mandatory systemwide student charges at 2011-12 levels, contingent on passage of the initiative.

Regents, meeting in Sacramento, call on Legislature to reinvest

May 15, 2012:

With state budget negotiations in full swing, members of the UC Board of Regents joined students in Sacramento Tuesday and called on lawmakers to reinvest in public higher education. Regents remained in the capital on Wednesday, holding their first board meeting there since 1993.

Board of Regents seeks applicants for staff advisor-designate

January 17, 2012:

Applications for the next staff advisor-designate to the UC Board of Regents are being accepted through Friday, March 2. Staff advisors bring the voice and perspective of staff and non-Senate academic employees to board deliberations. The position’s term runs July 2012 through June 2014.

Regents approve increase in retirement contribution rate

November 29, 2011:

The UC Board of Regents on Nov. 28 approved an increase in retirement-plan contribution rates for both UC and its employees. Effective July 2013, faculty and staff will contribute 6.5 percent of their pay to UCRP, while UC will contribute 12 percent — up from the current rates of 3.5 and 7 percent respectively. Rates for represented employees are subject to collective bargaining.

Postponed regents meeting now set for Nov. 28

November 18, 2011:

The UC Board of Regents meeting, which the Board postponed, citing public-safety concerns, has been rescheduled for Monday, Nov. 28. UC staff and members of the public in attendance on four campuses — UC San Francisco-Mission Bay, UCLA, UC Davis and UC Merced — will be interconnected via teleconference. The meeting will be streamed live online.

Regents chair calls for long-term state support

June 14, 2011:

In a video statement, Russell Gould, chair of the UC Board of Regents, reflects on the role UC plays in California’s economy and the importance of state financial support to sustain the university as an engine of opportunity.
