Contest winners shine new light on Fiat Lux

April 9, 2013:

The Fiat Lux Remix contest invited students, faculty and staff members to revisit images of UC campuses commissioned in the mid-1960s by then-President Clark Kerr and taken by legendary photographer Ansel Adams – and published in the book Fiat Lux – and give them their own spin.

Righting the SHIP

February 19, 2013:

In a Daily Cal op-ed, three Berkeley administrators — Ron Coley, associate vice chancellor of business and administrative services; Harry Le Grande, vice chancellor of student affairs; and Andrew Szeri, dean of the Graduate Division — offer some recommendations “to ensure effective and efficient administration” of the UC Student Health Insurance Program, or SHIP.

President Yudof to end his tenure in August

January 18, 2013:

Mark Yudof will step down as president of the University of California effective Aug. 31. He announced his decision in a Jan. 18 statement. Chancellor Birgeneau issues a statement praising his leadership.

Online ed aims to meet undergrads’ needs

January 17, 2013:

At the UC Board of Regents Jan. 16 meeting, President Yudof described efforts to build a larger catalog of online courses, which could make up as much as 11 percent of the undergraduate curriculum over the next five years. This would allow incoming freshmen to fulfill a portion of their lower-division coursework online, he said.

UC sustainability savings add up: $91M and counting

January 16, 2013:

The University of California has saved $91 million in energy costs since 2004, and it expects even greater dividends ahead as it ramps up its sustainability practices.

UC to get modest boost from state budget

January 10, 2013:

California Gov. Jerry Brown has proposed a state spending plan for the coming fiscal year that would provide a modest boost to the University of California’s operating budget for 2013-14.

Regents approve chancellor appointment

November 27, 2012:

The UC Board of Regents today (Nov. 27) approved the appointment of Nicholas Dirks, executive vice president and dean of the faculty for Arts and Sciences at Columbia University, as the 10th chancellor of UC Berkeley. Dirks will succeed Chancellor Birgeneau on June 1, 2013.

Yudof, chancellors express ‘relief and gratitude’ on Prop. 30

November 7, 2012:

On the day following the election, the chancellors of 10 UC campuses, along with UC President Mark Yudof, issued a message expressing thanks to the UC community for efforts leading to the passage of Proposition 30.

Clark Kerr served as UC Berkeley chancellor, UC president and higher-education leader during times of immense change and upheaval in the 1950s and ’60s. His long-time friend David Gardner, UC president emeritus, examines Kerr’s private life and public leadership in a new paper from the Center for Studies in Higher Education.

150th anniversary for Civil War-era law that helped bring UC into being

June 29, 2012:

One hundred and fifty years ago, as the Civil War raged, President Abraham Lincoln signed a law that would lead to the founding on the University of California six years later. An informal commemoration of the Morrill Land Grant Act was Monday at the Campanile.

UC boosts emphasis on composting organic waste

May 23, 2012:

Recycling has allowed UC to divert more than 50 percent of its waste from landfills. But to reach its goal of “zero waste” by 2020, it needs to start composting. Hence the green bins, for organic waste, becoming commonplace at Berkeley and other UC campuses. Dining facilities, residence halls and sports stadiums are some of the first composting sites.

UC releases draft report on response to campus protests

May 4, 2012:

University of California officials today (May 4) released a report that examines policies and practices related to UC responses to campus protests at Berkeley and Davis last November. It will be online for three weeks to allow time for comments.

April 24, 2012:

The State of California needs to consider the whopping return on investments for higher education as it tries to balance its budget, UC Berkeley researchers say in new study, “California’s Economic Payoff: Investing in College Access and Completion.”

UC resuming ScholarShare payroll deductions

April 3, 2012:

UC is getting ready to resume payroll deductions for employee contributions to ScholarShare, the California college savings plan, starting with the first full payroll in April 2012. Employee contributions to the program were temporarily discontinued in November.

March 23, 2012:

The March edition of UC’s “Our University” newsletter for faculty and staff has just been posted online, with news about President Yudof’s meetings around the state to promote the university’s contributions to California.

UC grad students take their research to Sacramento

March 15, 2012:

The newest issue of ‘Our University,’ the UC newsletter for faculty and staff, features the systemwide Working Smarter Initiative, which has produced $157 million in cost savings and revenue generation in its first year.

Higher UCRP contributions to affect paychecks beginning July 20

July 20, 2011:

Faculty and staff will see a change in their next paychecks, as higher employee contributions to the retirement fund kick in. For most employees, contributions are increasing from 2 to 3.5 percent of pay; UC’s contribution increases from 4 percent to 7 percent.
