Positive outcomes and lessons to be learned from new approaches to help girls and women struggling in developing countries will be explored at an April 28 symposium to be hosted by the Center for Evaluation of Global Action (CEGA), based at UC Berkeley.

Physics society honors Birgeneau for ‘statesmanship in science’

The American Institute of Physics has awarded Chancellor Robert Birgeneau the 2012 Karl Taylor Compton Medal for Leadership in Physics. The medal honors Birgeneau’s advocacy for women in science as well as his research.
UC mentors next generation of women in STEM fields

A nationwide online mentoring program, Women in Technology Sharing Online (WitsOn), seeks to connect women students pursuing STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) degrees with women leaders from academia and industry. Students and faculty from Berkeley and seven other UC campuses are participating.
Study shows need to eliminate sex bias in research
April 18, 2011:
A recent study by UC Berkeley neuroscientists Emily Jacobs and Mark D’Esposito highlights the need to include female animals in research studies, since sex hormones have an impact on how females respond. The research, published April 6, showed that estrogen levels affected how women scored on memory tests.
Linda Schacht Gage honored at “Outstanding Women of Berkeley” awards ceremony

Linda Schacht Gage was honored last night as one 2011′s seven “Outstanding Women of Berkeley” by the City of Berkeley Commission on the Status of Women. The Emmy award-winning television reporter has deep connections to UC Berkeley. She has been a visiting lecturer at the School of Journalism since 1992, and has served on the boards of The Daily Californian, the UC Library Advisory Board and the UC Board of Trustees. Her work on the board of the Berkeley Library Foundation was instrumental in the renovation of Berkeley’s downtown library and four branch libraries.
‘A Woman’s Nation’ reveals a workplace transformation

Women now make up half the American workforce, a dramatic social transformation over just one generation, according to the Shriver Report, co-produced by a Berkeley Law team. But public policy hasn’t kept up with the massive social change.
